Keywords, also known as queries or search terms, play a central role in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) process. If you run a local business that offers products and/or services, the goal is to have your business listing and website pages show prominently for those that are searching online for what you can provide. A critical question to consider then is which specific keywords to target in your digital marketing efforts.
Many businesses put a significant amount of emphasis on “core keywords”, meaning those that directly pertain to the specific products or services they provide. As an example, attorneys may focus on core keywords such as “workers compensation attorney”, “personal injury lawyer”, and “law firm”. While it is essential to incorporate such foundational search terms into your overall SEO strategy, our extensive experience has shown that diversifying keyword lists is equally essential for success.
Combine Service/Product Terms with Locations
Particularly for Local SEO, it is important to keep in mind that a majority of the time searchers are looking for products and services nearby their geographic locations. Google and the other prominent search engines take location into account, and “near me” searches will only continue to gain additional traction. As such, it is our recommendation that local businesses expand their keyword targeting to include “service/product + location” queries as well.
The process itself is fairly straightforward to implement. First, you want to make a list of your main services/products and also include any keywords from your Google Business categories. Next, make a list of all the cities (and counties if applicable) that surround your location in a 10 to 15 mile radius. Once you have the services/products list and the locations list, you want to combine each service/product keyword with each location to create a main service/product + location keyword list.
Going back to the previous example, you would take main service/product keywords like “workers compensation attorney” and “personal injury lawyer” and combine those with locations such as “Los Angeles” and “Ventura County”. What you want to end up with then is a list that includes “workers compensation attorney Los Angeles”, “personal injury lawyer Ventura County”, etc.
Build Optimized Website Pages for Service/City Keywords
From there, we strongly recommend building separate website pages for each service/product + location keyword. When building these pages, you want to be sure to include keyword-optimized titles, meta descriptions, URLs, headers, paragraph text, images, and all other relevant page elements.
Keyword diversification with a focus on building pages for service/product and location combinations is a central part of Fivespot’s main Local SEO strategy.
